International Data Corporation (IDC) released the results of a 2016 IDC Innovators study assessing self-service data preparation software vendors. In this research, IDC highlighted three emerging self-service data preparation companies as IDC Innovators for 2016: Paxata, Trifacta, and Unifi Software. Self-service data preparation tools provide users with the ability to organize, cleanse, standardize, and repackage data into a specific format for business use.

"Self-service data preparation isn't new, it has been happening for years in 'name your favorite spreadsheet' software, or it has been limited to highly technical subject matter experts in the domain of IT," said Stewart Bond, director, Data Integration and Integrity Software research at IDC. "However, there is a new class of software available that provides the business user with ease-of-use while allowing IT to maintain control and avoid the issues of spreadsheet sprawl; Paxata, Trifacta, and Unifi are emerging software vendors that have helped define this new class of self-service data preparation, and their innovations have been disruptive for incumbents in the data integration and integrity software market.

Paxata utilizes machine learning, semantic analysis, and natural language processing for its self-service data preparation solution and can work in conjunction with data service providers, cloud applications, and desktop files. Trifacta offers three editions of its solution - a free desktop, an enterprise scale server, and an edge edition for smaller workloads and teams - providing a self-service data preparation solution that integrates with external governance applications for centralized control and collaboration. Unifi Software uses a prescriptive process-oriented approach to data preparation activities, combined with a comprehensive data catalog that provides text-based search capabilities to help users find data within a Hadoop cluster.

IDC Innovators: Self-Service Data Preparation, 2016 profiles three vendors in the self-service data preparation market with an innovative technology or a groundbreaking new business model or both. The IDC Innovators research document examines self-service data preparation companies with revenue of less than $50 million with a product, service, or business model with a specific use case.
