Google Acquires Croatian App Photomath
Alphabet's unit Google announced it has acquired the Croatian maths app Photomath. The agreement was made nine months ago, in May 2022, and has now become subject to regulatory review.
EU antitrust regulators have set a March 28 deadline for their decision. The EU competition body can clear the deal with or without remedies after its preliminary review or it can open an investigation if it has serious concerns.
"We can confirm that we entered into an agreement to acquire Photomath in May 2022," a Google spokesperson said. "Photomath's technology will help Google to enhance its ability to provide better math learning experiences to students, helping to build out Google's homework help offerings for users."
Photomath's app uses a smartphone camera or scientific calculator to recognize and explain symbolic math problems. It is the most popular app built in Croatia with over 300 million downloads. It is available around the world in over 30 languages.
