Apple Announces New Smart Home Devices

Apple intends to intensify its presence in the smart home sector under the leadership of new CEO John Ternus, according to recent media reports. This strategic push is expected to commence today with the introduction of a long-anticipated home hub.

The smart-home hub, designated by the code name J490, will feature an approximately 6-inch square display situated on a perforated speaker base, with the countertop version utilizing an adjustable arm for display tilting. A separate wall-mounted iteration is code-named J491. The grey aluminum device utilizes USB-C power and does not include internal batteries or physical buttons.

The hub will utilize integrated microphones and a front-facing FaceTime camera to identify residents by voice or appearance, subsequently displaying personalized calendars, messages, and contacts. A virtual white ring light will illuminate users approaching in low-visibility conditions, while an iPhone can facilitate secondary authentication if facial recognition fails. A visitor mode is also included to safeguard personal information from guests.

The technology giant anticipates that consumers will install multiple displays throughout the home for intercom functionality, music streaming, and HomeKit accessory control. In a kitchen setting, the hub can provide voice-guided recipes. Furthermore, the company is updating its ecosystem of supporting accessories.

The HomePod mini and Apple TV will maintain their current industrial designs but will incorporate faster processors capable of executing Siri’s enhanced AI models. The HomePod mini will also be available in new pink and green finishes. Apple is concurrently developing a premium 9-inch display mounted on a 360-degree robotic arm, alongside a refreshed full-sized HomePod, for a future release.
