Binance Faces Historic $6.3 Billion Security Breach
Numerous news organizations reported on Friday that hackers successfully exfiltrated $6.3 billion from Binance, currently the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. The breach has been attributed to state-sponsored actors from North Korea and potentially represents the most significant financial heist in history.
In response to the incident, Binance suspended all withdrawals and committed to utilizing corporate reserves to compensate for the losses. Stablecoin issuers have already moved to freeze approximately half of the stolen assets. The exchange reassured users that customer funds remain secure and stated that it is collaborating with industry partners to recover the affected assets, with approximately $3 billion identified thus far.
Co-CEO Yi He noted on social media that the $3 billion identified represents roughly 2% of the company’s total user assets and public reserves. The exchange further disclosed that it has allocated $6.34 billion in internal corporate funds to cover the impact of the theft. Additionally, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao indicated that the firm maintains SpaceX holdings valued at over $1 billion.
Co-CEO Richard Teng characterized the breach as a sophisticated, multi-party attack involving a compromised corporate laptop and advanced malware. The malicious software was designed to systematically erase evidence of its presence, significantly complicating forensic investigations and recovery efforts.
Teng explained that the attackers manipulated a transaction approval system to exfiltrate funds from a "hot wallet"—an internet-connected storage unit—by bypassing standard approval protocols. "We are operating continuously to resolve this matter, ensure users are fully compensated, and maintain the trust placed in our platform," Teng stated.
