Google Set to Invest €13 Billion in Finnish AI

Google is set to invest at least €13 billion in digital infrastructure in Finland over the next two years. This massive financial commitment places AI facilities, nuclear power, and renewable energy at the core of Google's largest single investment project within the European region to date.

The investment will fund new digital infrastructure across several Finnish regions, including Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, as the tech giant seeks to expand its service capacity. This capital infusion is projected to support more than 37,000 jobs across the country and contribute an average of €3.6 billion annually to Finland’s GDP. Once these facilities become fully operational, they are expected to support approximately 7,000 jobs on an annual basis.

The plan also includes €31 million dedicated to local community initiatives over a four-year period, with €10 million earmarked specifically for research and innovation. Furthermore, local partnerships will facilitate AI skills training for more than 4,400 workers. Google has stated that the new sites will utilize existing grid infrastructure and be situated near carbon-free energy sources. Additionally, the funding will support biodiversity restoration projects, including the preservation of native forests, peatlands, and wetlands.

Google’s commitment to Finland significantly outweighs its other recent European outlays, such as the €5.5 billion pledged to Germany through 2029 and the €600 million for an AI facility in the Netherlands in 2024. The company also recently started construction on its first data center in Austria. Parallel to these infrastructure developments, Google has entered into a 22-year power purchase agreement with the Finnish energy firm Fortum to support the continued operation of a nuclear power plant located near Loviisa.

This latest investment deepens Google's longstanding presence in Finland, where it has operated its Hamina data center since 2009, supporting a network of over 600 suppliers including domestic operators like DNA and Elisa as well as Nokia. Commenting on the Google investment, Nokia CEO Justin Hotard pointed to its partnership with the company on delivering optical and IP networks, while outlining a commitment to build out infrastructure to help connect Google’s activities in Finland to the world.
