Google Set to Launch Its AI Chips into Orbit

Google has announced plans to deploy a selection of its artificial intelligence processors into orbit this week. The initiative serves as a practical extraterrestrial evaluation of hardware typically utilized in terrestrial data center environments.

The prototype for Project Suncatcher is scheduled for deployment via SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission, according to Travis Beals, Google’s Senior Director for Paradigms of Intelligence. Constructed by Planet Labs, the satellite features the same tensor processing units (TPUs) employed in Google’s global server farms. The company intends to monitor hardware performance regarding radiation exposure, launch-related vibrations, and the complex requirements of thermal management within a vacuum.

This mission seeks to identify potential vulnerabilities and determine the operational viability of existing hardware in low-Earth orbit. Project Suncatcher, initially announced in November 2025, investigates whether constellations of solar-powered satellites can effectively manage substantial AI workloads. Google estimates that orbital panels could produce up to eight times more energy than terrestrial versions due to nearly uninterrupted solar exposure.

A subsequent trial is slated for 2027, during which Google and Planet aim to deploy two satellites to test high-bandwidth laser communication necessary for interconnected TPU clusters. Thermal regulation remains a primary engineering challenge; without atmospheric airflow, the processors must utilize advanced heat pipes and radiators. Furthermore, significant launch expenses, limited manufacturing capacity, and reliability concerns suggest that commercial implementation remains a distant prospect.
