iPhone Users Lead Microdrama Spending Growth

Users of Apple’s iPhone spend approximately 40% more on microdrama applications compared to Android users, according to new research from Omdia. These findings are challenging prevailing industry assumptions regarding the target demographics and payment behaviors associated with this rapidly expanding entertainment format.

While microdramas have often been categorized as content appealing primarily to lower-income or specialized audiences, Omdia’s analysis suggests a more complex market reality. In several key international markets, iPhone users exhibit a notably higher inclination to pay for microdrama content than their Android counterparts, signaling significant commercial potential within this segment. In the United States, adoption of the format is well-integrated across both major mobile platforms, with roughly 9% of iPhone owners and 10% of Android users having accessed at least one microdrama app in the last quarter. Furthermore, monetization rates are remarkably consistent in the U.S., with nearly 70% of users across both ecosystems utilizing subscriptions or in-app purchases.

However, outside the U.S. market, distinct discrepancies in consumer behavior become evident. In Brazil, 48% of iPhone users pay for microdrama services, compared to 39% for Android; in Germany, the ratio stands at 49% to 44%. South Korea exhibits the most significant disparity, with 59% of iPhone users paying for content versus 45% of Android users. Supporting these survey results, Sensor Tower data analyzed by Omdia indicates that iPhone users spend an average of $14 per week on microdrama apps, compared to $10 for Android users. The research concludes that while audience reach is converging across platforms, the willingness to pay and overall lifetime value vary significantly by device ecosystem and geographic region.
