Microsoft Implements Voluntary Exit Program for Global Workforce

Microsoft is extending a voluntary separation initiative to its employees to optimize operating expenses while increasing its investments in artificial intelligence. The offer is available for a limited time and includes financial compensation and career-transition resources.

The program is reportedly targeting approximately 60,000 employees. According to Microsoft’s fiscal year 2026 annual report, the company employed 223,000 full-time staff globally as of June 30, meaning this initiative could potentially affect more than 25% of its total workforce.

Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s Chief People Officer, stated that the program is open to eligible staff in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and India at level 70 and below within the corporate hierarchy. Participation is restricted to specific business units, with eligibility determined by departmental priorities, customer obligations, and broader workforce requirements.

Internal sources suggest the offer extends to teams within Copilot, AI experiences, finance, human resources, Xbox, and the Windows + Devices division. Conversely, marketing, security, and commercial business units are reportedly excluded. “This initiative provides eligible employees considering a career change with the support to make that transition now,” Coleman remarked, noting that the company intends to evaluate the results of this approach.

This move follows a previous voluntary buyout offer for 9,000 U.S. staff earlier this year and the announcement of 4,800 layoffs in July within the Xbox division. These restructuring efforts coincide with Microsoft's massive capital commitment to AI, including an anticipated $175 billion expenditure on data centers and specialized hardware for the 2026 calendar year.
