Qualcomm Signs Partnerships for Robotics Push in Japan

Qualcomm is looking to drive progress in robotics and industrial automation across Japan through strategic partnerships with several of the nation’s leading technology companies. As part of this initiative, the collaborators have announced plans to establish a dedicated research and development facility.

The broader objective of this push is to foster an open robotics ecosystem within Japan, aimed at accelerating innovation in edge AI. Central to this effort is the Qualcomm Japan Robotics Center, which will serve as a hub for industrial collaboration, workforce training, research and development, and general innovation in the field. This move underscores Qualcomm's strategic commitment to supporting Japan’s established leadership in robotics, physical AI, and automation technologies.

The chipmaker has secured a high-profile roster of partners for this endeavor, including NTT Docomo, KDDI, Fujitsu, Kawasaki, Toyota, NEC, Panasonic, Sony, and Preferred Networks. These research efforts will also be bolstered by academic institutions, most notably the University of Tokyo. Qualcomm indicated that its objectives in the region are closely aligned with the priorities of Japanese authorities, who are seeking to address pressing labor shortages by accelerating the adoption of AI and robotics in critical industrial sectors.

Beyond the new research hub, the initiative includes programs designed to help Japanese companies scale their solutions on a global level and support high-impact physical AI projects that showcase the potential of intelligent automation. Nakul Duggal, Qualcomm Technologies EVP and group GM for automotive, industrial and embedded IoT, and robotics, stated that the company hopes its investments and the new center will provide a foundation for deeper cooperation between industry, academia, and the startup ecosystem: “Together, we aim to help accelerate the development, deployment, and global scale-up of next-generation physical AI and intelligent robotics solutions.”
