SpaceX Bought Low-Band Spectrum from Grain Management
SpaceX has finalized an agreement to acquire a US low-band spectrum portfolio from Grain Management. This acquisition enhances the company's ability to compete with established US telecommunications carriers for mobile subscribers.
The transaction involves Grain Management’s entire nationwide portfolio of up to 14MHz of paired spectrum in the 800MHz band and is subject to regulatory approval by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
“This is the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America,” Elon Musk stated on X in response to a post regarding the company’s direct-to-device (D2D) strategy.
SpaceX indicated that Starlink Mobile’s global 2GHz mid-band spectrum will provide high-capacity coverage in the US, while the newly acquired low-band frequencies will enhance signal penetration through obstacles and improve indoor service. The company noted that the majority of existing mobile devices already support this underutilized band.
SpaceX intends to pair its satellite infrastructure with ground-based femtocells to deliver 5G mobile coverage, a strategy that some industry executives view with skepticism. The company stated that the low-band spectrum would resolve a primary remaining technical gap, facilitating Starlink Mobile's emergence as a major U.S. mobile carrier.
The company further noted that, upon receiving approval, it will implement a flexible architecture that integrates its satellite-to-mobile constellation with an advanced terrestrial deployment to provide seamless connectivity. This move aligns with its plan to launch a D2D service to compete with T-Mobile US, Verizon, and AT&T.
