UK Announces Plans to Form Satellite Defence Team

The United Kingdom has unveiled plans to establish its inaugural satellite protection unit intended to secure critical communication infrastructure. A contingent of highly specialized military personnel is being integrated into the RAF No.III Space Effects Squadron to mitigate various threats to satellites that the UK utilizes for mobile connectivity, maritime navigation, and missile detection systems.

In a keynote address at the inaugural UK Space Power Conference, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting characterized space as an essential progression in the evolution of national defensive capabilities, which have historically focused on maritime and aerial control. Streeting asserted that the government must ensure its strategic deterrence in the space domain aligns with its terrestrial counterparts.

Space is no longer a conceptual realm of science fiction; rather, satellites are fundamental to intelligence gathering and early warning systems. Approximately 20% of the UK economy is dependent on this hardware, and the failure of GPS alone would incur a daily economic loss of £1.4 billion. Streeting noted that adversaries are investing significantly in weaponry capable of neutralizing satellite systems, citing reports of Russian interference with the communications of at least 12 European satellites since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022.

The RAF No.III Space Effects Squadron has been authorized to conduct both offensive and defensive operations to disrupt, degrade, and deny hostile activities. This unit complements two existing RAF space squadrons responsible for monitoring and alerting the nation to space-based threats.
