Whistleblower Doubts Firms Will Honor US AI Safety Pledge

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen has expressed skepticism regarding whether artificial intelligence firms will adhere to a voluntary safety commitment. This pledge was established following a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump last week.

Haugen asserted that OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Google must demonstrate genuine compliance with the AI accord. “The history of tech companies engaging with regulation is: Often they will follow the exact written statement when we are dealing with very flexible systems,” Haugen remarked.

She questioned whether these organizations would observe the spirit of the regulations or leverage behaviors not explicitly forbidden to circumvent regulatory intent. Haugen cited Anthropic and CEO Dario Amodei’s endorsement of independent auditors as evidence of a more proactive stance toward safety as existential concerns intensify. “I think that is an acknowledgement that at least Dario knows that if you’re given the space to cut corners, even the angels among us begin to cut corners,” Haugen noted.

In 2021, Haugen, formerly a product manager for Facebook’s civic misinformation unit, provided internal documentation to the Wall Street Journal, resulting in a series of reports titled "The Facebook Files." These documents presented evidence that the company was aware of the detrimental effects its platforms had on the mental health of teenagers.
