European Edge Continuum Goes Live
Deutsche Telekom

At Mobile World Congress 2026, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, TIM, and Vodafone will announce the successful live demonstration of the European Edge Continuum, the first federated edge cloud connecting the networks of Europe’s five largest operators. The milestone marks a breakthrough within the 8ra initiative and the Important Project of Common European Interest on Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS).

The operators stated they had successfully federated their edge environments, allowing customers and developers to deploy applications automatically and securely across nodes from the operators, with the potential to expand to include other major technology players in the future. The federation is in operation in lab and pre-production environments, marking a decisive step towards industrial and commercial rollout.

Through an extended footprint, allowing access to resources provided by multiple operators through a single entry point, the group pointed to dynamic workload allocation, intelligent distribution of applications across federated nodes, cost efficiency, mobility, and ensuring service continuity even as users move across networks.

Beyond interoperability and security, the offering is designed to introduce several key benefits in edge environments. “This federation proves that Europe is not just talking about digital sovereignty. We are building it,” said Christine Knackfuß-Nikolic, Chief Sovereign Officer at T-Systems. “By uniting our networks and expertise, we are creating a secure, open, and trusted digital ecosystem made in Europe for Europe’s digital future.”
