The GSMA has announced its newly constituted board, tasked with steering the organization through pivotal decisions regarding 6G, satellite integration, and spectrum management. Six new companies have joined the leadership group for the upcoming term.
The board maintains its total size of 26 members, though corporate representation has evolved, with Axiata Group, Millicom, NTT Docomo, Ooredoo Group, stc, and Telstra assuming positions. Conversely, Ethio Telecom, KDDI, KT, Telenor, TIM, and Veon have rotated off the list for the forthcoming biennial board.
Organizations that have retained their board seats with new representatives include AT&T, China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, e&, Globe Telecom, and Telefonica. Entities such as America Movil, Bharti Airtel, BT Group, Liberty Global, MTN Group, Orange, Reliance Jio, Personal (formerly Telecom Argentina), Turkcell, Verizon, and Vodafone Group continue with their previous representatives. GSMA Director General Vivek Badrinath completes the board membership.
The technical objectives for the forthcoming tenure include establishing preliminary 6G standards, developing regulatory frameworks for non-terrestrial (NTN) and satellite communications, and coordinating spectrum allocations. The ITU’s WRC-27 is slated for October and November 2027. Additionally, a primary focus for the GSMA’s next board will be the implications of artificial intelligence for the mobile industry.
Current Chair Gopal Vittal observed that emerging technology and open digital platforms represent opportunities to generate substantial economic and social value, which the organization aims to realize. Vittal emphasized a continued commitment to digital safety and trust, alongside initiatives to bridge connectivity and usage gaps.
