Shipments of foldable smartphone displays are projected to recover in 2026, according to Omdia. This expansion will be facilitated by the debut of book-type foldable smartphones featuring updated and wider screen aspect ratios.
Starting in 2026, Samsung and Apple have launched book-type foldable devices with broader aspect ratios. Compared to the traditional 10:9 main display and 21:9 front display configuration, foldable devices with ratios like 4:3 and 14:10 support enhanced multitasking, content consumption, and productivity similar to tablet PCs. The market has reacted favorably to this form factor, signaling a successful initial phase of consumer adoption. Chinese smartphone manufacturers are anticipated to implement wider-format foldable designs beginning in 2027.
Consequently, Omdia projects that AMOLED display shipments for foldable smartphones will rise to 29 million units in 2026, a 44% year-on-year increase. The LTPO-based flexible AMOLED segment is expected to see significant growth. “Wide-screen foldable display shipments are forecast to represent 44% of total foldable panels in 2026. This share is expected to exceed 60% in 2027, as additional Chinese manufacturers enter the market,” stated Brian Huh, Principal Analyst in Omdia’s Display research practice.
