Amazon decided to slash 14,000 corporate jobs as it continues a push to slim down its operation. The company pointed out that it needs to be in a position to act quickly in the era of the latest generation of AI.

In a notice distributed to employees, Amazon SVP people experience and technology Beth Galetti said the move is part of a drive to strengthen the company by cutting bureaucracy and shifting resources to support its biggest bets. She did not explain which parts of its corporate workforce would be impacted or how the cuts would be distributed across its global footprint.

Explaining the rationale for the move despite the company performing well and producing strong business results, the executive said that the world is changing quickly. “This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the internet, and it’s enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before,” Galetti said, pointing to this being the case in new and current market segments.

“We need to be organized more leanly, with fewer layers and more ownership, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and business,” concluded Galetti. Amazon stated the reductions are linked to an ambition to be the world’s largest start-up.
