European Union hit Amazon with a record €746 million fine. It was imposed for processing personal data in violation of the GDPR rules.

The Luxembourg National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD) set the fine on Amazon in mid July, the company said in a regulatory filing. Amazon will appeal the fine, according to a company spokesperson.

Global regulatory scrutiny of tech giants has been increasing after several scandals over privacy and misinformation and numerous complaints from businesses and interest groups. GDPR, on which Amazon was fined, requires companies to seek people's consent before using their personal data.
