TIM Unveils €550 Million Green Plan to Mitigate Digital Impact

Telecom Italia announced several measures it expects to help towards achieving emission reduction targets in the years to 2050. The operator cited a need to reduce the environmental impact associated with the continued rise in use of digital technologies.

Actions outlined in TIM’s Climate Transition Plan are expected to cost around €550 million, cash already set aside for the activities in its current roadmap. TIM noted that the plan builds on existing sustainability initiatives and takes into account available funds and the technologies it is able to access in its markets of Italy and Brazil.

The operator is targeting the progressive cut of emissions in the years to 2050, with milestones at the turn of each decade. It encompasses all of the company’s main sources of emissions, including the supply chain, which accounts for more than 90% of its carbon footprint.

It intends to adopt more energy-efficient infrastructure, use power from renewable sources, select technologies with a lower environmental impact, and align expectations with its supply chain. Specific actions planned include accelerating migration to 5G, which has a lower energy consumption per unit than alternative mobile generations, and modernizing data centers with more efficient cooling and energy management systems.

Describing the rationale for the plan, TIM CEO Pietro Labriola explained that cloud computing and AI are driving demand for connectivity and computing power at an unprecedented rate. “We cannot ignore this. With our Climate Transition Plan, we have set out a path to reduce our emissions whilst supporting digital growth. We will make our processes and infrastructure more efficient to reduce consumption and adopt technologies with a lower environmental impact,” said Labriola.
