Amazon Denies Reporting on Tariff Cost
Amazon denied it planned to display the impact of tariffs on each product it sells on its main e-commerce website.
Amazon denied it planned to display the impact of tariffs on each product it sells on its main e-commerce website. The previous media report speculating the move was met with a rebuke by the US government.
Several media outlets reported Amazon would soon display the impact of tariffs as a separate line item on each product it sold. Karoline Leavitt, The White House press secretary, reacted shortly after, stating in a news conference it was not a surprise Amazon would do this, describing it as a hostile and political act.
Amazon swiftly denied the report, stating it had only considered an idea for its low-cost Amazon Haul store to display the idea of listing import charges on certain products. “This was never a consideration for the main Amazon site, and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties. This was never approved and is not going to happen.”
US President Donald Trump also weighed in and phoned Amazon founder Jeff Bezos about the proposal. “He solved the problem very quickly, and he did the right thing. He’s a good guy,” Trump apparently said.
