OpenAI signed an agreement with AMD for GPUs to be used in its next-generation AI infrastructure. The deal is worth tens of billions of dollars. The ChatGPT developer gave an option to buy a 10% stake in its supplier as part of the contract.

Under the agreement, OpenAI will deploy six gigawatts of AMD GPUs in its infrastructure over time across multiple generations of the chipmaker’s silicon. The first batch, comprising AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI450 GPUs, is set to be supplied in 2H26.

In a joint statement, the companies highlighted they would also share technical expertise to optimize product roadmaps, noting the tie-up was built on existing collaborations. They positioned the partnership as one that would enable very large-scale AI deployments and advance the entire ecosystem.

As part of the deal, AMD issued OpenAI with a performance-based warrant giving it the option to buy up to 160 million AMD shares in tranches at a set price. This activates as milestones are achieved and could eventually amount to around a 10% stake.

AMD chair and CEO Lisa Su said that this partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI to create a true win-win, enabling the world’s most ambitious AI buildout and advancing the entire AI ecosystem. Its CFO, Jean Hu, estimated it would deliver tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD while accelerating OpenAI’s AI infrastructure buildout.

OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman noted that the pact is a major step in building the computing capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential. He added that AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable it to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster.
