HP and Huawei Sign Global Wi-Fi Patent Licensing Agreement

HP and Huawei have entered into a global cross-licensing agreement covering a range of Wi-Fi patents. According to a statement from Huawei, the deal grants HP access to specific Wi-Fi technologies developed by the Chinese vendor. While the partnership is a significant move in the ICT space, the financial terms and the specific duration of the contract have not been disclosed by either party.

Alan Fan, Huawei’s Chief IP Officer, noted that the agreement serves as a testament to the company’s ongoing independent innovation in cutting-edge ICT fields. He explained that through patent licensing, Huawei aims to share its standardized technological advancements with the broader industry to improve consumer experiences globally. HP did not provide a comment within Huawei’s official announcement, but in a separate statement, the US-based IT company clarified that the deal is a standard-essential license. HP emphasized that such licenses are routine for companies whose products utilize Wi-Fi connectivity and are broadly employed across the industry.

Huawei highlighted the critical role of Wi-Fi technology, noting that while Wi-Fi 4 and 5 remain widely used for reliable networking in less demanding applications, newer generations offer significant performance leaps. Wi-Fi 6 provides higher speeds and lower energy consumption for services like gaming, whereas Wi-Fi 7 is designed to support 8K video, AR/VR, and cloud computing. HP later sought to clarify that the agreement was part of a broader partnership and pushed back against what it called a "mischaracterization" of the deal. The company explained that because Huawei holds a large number of essential Wi-Fi patents, HP faced the choice between licensing or litigation, ultimately deciding to resolve the dispute to ensure its ability to serve its customers.
