Mistral AI unveiled plans to invest €1.2 billion in a new data center in Sweden in partnership with infrastructure operator EcoDataCenter. This is the first AI infrastructure investment by the French startup outside its home market.

The pair will deploy the facility at EcoDataCenter’s Borlange site, with operations scheduled to begin in 2027. The site will host large-scale computing to support the development and deployment of Mistral’s next-generation models, expand compute capacity, and support the European push for sovereign AI.

Mistral AI CEO and co-founder Arthur Mensch said that the investment represents a concrete step toward building independent capabilities in Europe, dedicated to AI. He added that the company aims to deliver a fully vertical offer with locally processed and stored data, reinforcing Europe’s strategic autonomy and competitiveness.

EcoDataCenter will design, build, and operate the facility using renewable energy and advanced cooling systems capable of handling high-density AI workloads. The facility is designed for scalability and will deploy Nvidia’s GPUs, providing advanced compute capacity for AI training and inference.

EcoDataCenter CEO Peter Michelson noted that AI is critical infrastructure for Europe’s competitiveness, security, and economic growth. He added that the partners are building infrastructure with sustainability, resilience, and European strategic autonomy at its core.
