Earlier this week, Elon Musk announced that many of the staff would be laid off barely a week after completing a contentious $44 billion acquisition of the social media site. The Layoffs started yesterday with around 3,700 employees being cut.

"In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday," Twitter said in an email to staff on Thursday evening. 3,700 employees that were laid off present about half of Twitter’s total staff.

The move forms part of Musk’s turnaround plan for Twitter, which has faced struggles with profitability. He is also looking at subscription fees as a means of raising revenue. Musk blamed the losses on a coalition of civil rights groups that has been pressing Twitter's top advertisers to take action if he did not protect content moderation.
