Telia and Ericsson have transitioned 6G development from laboratory environments into active field trials of the technology. The organizations contend that this initiative could position Sweden as a global leader in next-generation telecommunications systems.

The partners maintain that their research will provide the AI-integrated infrastructure Sweden requires to become a global leader in secure digital equipment, targeting commercial 6G deployment between 2030 and 2032. Anders Olsson, CEO of Telia Sweden, stated that 6G evolution is driven by societal and enterprise requirements, ultimately enhancing national security and economic competitiveness.

The corporations are organizing trials to evaluate network coverage, signal performance, uplink capacity, reliability, and latency. Ericsson is utilizing technologies centered on the upper 6GHz band, which may be incorporated into future 6G standards. Subsequent testing is expected to encompass both the 6GHz and 600MHz frequency bands.

Patrick Johansson, Ericsson’s Head of EMEA, remarked that Nordic countries are traditionally leaders in adopting emerging mobile technologies, a status reinforced by the vendor’s collaboration with Telia. The firms launched the NorthStar program in 2023 to optimize 5G for industrial sectors, refocusing on 6G earlier this year via the Digital Arena Sweden initiative. Olsson highlighted that the companies maintain extensive research alliances with industrial, academic, and public sector stakeholders.
