Foldable Smartphone Market Recovers in 2Q25

Global foldable smartphone shipments surged 45% in the second quarter of 2025, according to Counterpoint Research. The results are marking a significant recovery, helped by continued strength in China and a surging US market.

“The Chinese foldable smartphone market remains robust, with Huawei driving the market. Consumers are gravitating towards the Mate X6 – an ultra-premium book-type foldable – which accounted for over one-third of all foldables shipped by Huawei during 2Q25,” said Mengmeng Zhang, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research.

“Motorola has helped stoke the US foldables market, raising segment shipments to the highest levels ever for a Q2. At a retail price of $699 for the base model, pricing has been a big success factor for Motorola’s Razr series, which has had the luxury of being the lowest-cost foldable phone in the US – nobody has yet come close,” said Maurice Klaehne, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research.

Consequently, Samsung's market share more than halved, stifled by a surging Motorola. However, a strong showing in July will likely boost Samsung's share for the year.

“Samsung is set for a strong Q3, with the Galaxy Fold 7 series doing especially well compared to its predecessor. The ultra-premium fold form factor is back in spades, with sales more than doubling compared to last year’s Galaxy Fold 6 over the same period,”  said Jene Park, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research. “2024 was a transitional year for foldables, and we are expecting annual growth to revert to double-digit percentages over the medium term, especially with the expected launch of Apple’s foldable next year."
