United States and European Union are planning to make unified approach to limit the market power of big tech companies. The move is said to be announced at a US-EU trade and technology council meeting next week in Pittsburgh, Reuters reported, citing a draft memo.

US and EU are trying to restrain the power of tech giants and cooperation has become necessary across the Atlantic to achieve that. The White House announced that the council will hold its first meeting on September 29 in Pittsburgh. The council has 10 working groups for strengthening trade, economic relations and shared democratic values.

According to the memo, the group focused on tech company regulation will exchange information on approaches to technology platform governance, seeking convergence. The group will tackle areas such as hate speech, algorithmic amplification and data access for researchers. The council will also work to address the shortage of semiconductor chips.
