The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) have agreed to link their respective supercomputing platforms to accelerate the development of fusion energy through the use of AI. This Joint Declaration of Intent establishes the "Sunrise–Stellar-AI Federation," connecting the UKAEA’s £45 million ($59 million) Sunrise supercomputer with the US-based Stellar-AI platform.
This partnership pools high-performance computing resources to train shared machine learning models capable of analyzing experimental data from two primary spherical tokamak facilities: the MAST Upgrade in Oxfordshire and the NSTX-U in New Jersey. The participating entities noted that single-facility datasets often lack the breadth to generalize across different machine designs, and combining operational data from both sites will allow researchers to build more accurate digital twins and predictive models.
Beyond immediate data integration, the federation is designed to shorten design cycles for upcoming commercial fusion projects. This partnership builds on a memorandum of understanding signed between the UKAEA and PPPL in June, which established the overarching framework for collaborative efforts between the two organizations.
