The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) anticipates raising more than $100 billion through a series of planned spectrum auctions scheduled over the next two years. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr's comments follow the regulator's recent vote to auction 160MHz of spectrum in the upper C-band by July 2027.
Carr outlined a roadmap for three additional auctions following the C-band sale, with the objective of completing the entire process by the end of 2028. He noted that there is significant interest in spectrum from sectors beyond traditional telecom operators, suggesting that the upcoming auctions will invite fresh competition into the market. “We’re seeing real response in the market in ways that we didn’t see just a couple of years ago,” Carr stated.
The FCC is also preparing to vote on releasing spectrum specifically for the satellite industry, alongside a modernization of rules for ultra-wideband technology. The process for the FCC’s first spectrum auction in four years began in June, with 200 licenses currently available for bid.
