Samsung Unveils XR Headset
Samsung announced its new extended reality headset, the Galaxy XR.
Samsung announced its new extended reality headset, the Galaxy XR. The device features the new Android XR platform, which is priced at around half that of Apple’s Vision Pro.
The device, on sale for $1,799, is powered by a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip. The headset weighs 545g, making it more than 25% lighter than the Vision Pro, and has a 4K micro-OLED screen. As part of its broader XR roadmap, Samsung said it is developing multiple form factors, including AI glasses. It is partnering with consumer eyewear brand Warby Parker and South Korean fashion eyewear designer Gentle Monster, along with Google.
COO of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience business Won-Joon Choi declared in a statement that Galaxy XR expands the vision for mobile AI into a new frontier of immersive possibilities, allowing XR to move from concept to everyday reality. President of Android Ecosystem at Google, Sameer Samat, added that Android XR is the first Android platform built entirely for the Gemini era.
Samsung noted that with Gemini integrated at the system level, Galaxy XR helps users manage tasks and delivers natural and intuitive interactions through voice, vision, and gesture. It added that, since the platform is built on OpenXR standards, it is easy for developers using OpenXR, WebXR, or Unity to create apps. Galaxy XR is initially available in the US and South Korea.
