Telefonica added seven edge computing nodes across the home market in Spain. The company, thus, responded to the rising demand for computing, AI, and power capabilities.

The operator stated the seven nodes will be activated this year, adding to the ten already in operation in cities including Barcelona, Madrid, and Bilbao. By adding a further seven, Telefonica explained it would enable new digital services, accelerate business transformation, and strengthen data sovereignty.

The nodes are housed in Telefonica’s telecoms exchanges and are repurposed as edge data centres that meet stringent security and high-availability requirements for deployment and operations. Telefonica stated that customers can consume GPUs-as-a-service, without an initial capital outlay, keeping workloads sovereign and latency low.

The plan aligns with a European roadmap for the development of cloud-edge offerings, enabling businesses and public administrations to reduce dependence on providers whose platforms are located outside the European Union. Borja Ochoa, president of Telefonica Spain, said its edge plan places them at the European forefront of technology and data sovereignty.
